Why Social Media is Good for your Business (Part II)

Graham Buchanan - Friday, August 13, 2010

Earlier this week we looked at part I of why Social Media can be good for business. Here are parts 6 - 10.

6. Get your Hands Dirty – There is no greater way to benefit from social media than to get adequate education and hands on training of how to use social media (create user profiles, followers, ads).

7. Think of Social Media as a Vertical Search Engine – Social media acts like a search engine for finding people, videos, photos, documents, links, etc. A great way to generate leads. YouTube is the No.2 search engine after Google!

8. Great Ideas Drive Great Campaigns – Like any aspect of marketing, having a great, topical, timely, targeted idea can be the bud of a truly memorable social media campaign that spreads. Contests, polls and building your own community can create your own funnel of potential customers.

9. Don’t stop there! – Just as with traditional PR, outreach is a key aspect of an effective social media campaign. Digital PR is all about building and nurturing excellent relationships with key “web influencers” in your market, and the best approaches to use with them.

10. Measure and Repeat – Like all marketing initiatives, it is critical to benchmark the progress of your social media campaign at the start, at various milestones during, and then in an ongoing manner to keep your eye on the effect on your website traffic, your position in the page rankings, the engagement at your various social media locations, and most importantly – the increase in business leads and sales!

The combination of all these best practices is known as Social Media Optimisation or SMO – which shares in common with SEO, the end goal of getting found easily by people searching for information, entertainment, enlightenment, pretty pictures, videos and so on, online.

Social Media is affecting fundamental changes in consumer behaviour – specifically, how people research and buy products / services. How are you responding?

If you would like a copy of our white paper on our “Social Media How to Guide” (an overview of the main Social Media platforms, best practices on how to use them and how to get started), or “Social Media – Time is of the Essence” (gaining and maintaining a competitive advantage with social media), simply email us at the address below and we will send a copy to you.
