“Advanta has been using Graham’s services for some time, particularly for search engine optimisation in respect of our international and expat services. Having previously grown this international work primarily on client recommendation, in recent weeks we have been obtaining a significantly increased number of new international clients via search engines. “Graham is unlike many web designers in that he really understand business. It is this that sets him apart. He works with you to clarify exactly what your business needs, where it is now, where you are looking to get to and helps you to create a strategy and approach to fit with your organisations goals and your own.

In addition this tailored approach allows you to invest in the priorities for your web approach at times when your business can afford to. He really is a partner to your business and can work with simple websites to a full web strategy including linked in, Facebook and other social media for a fully integrated solution. A no-nonsense approach combined with business experience, technical know how and a great guy. I can warmly recommend Graham to anyone who needs a website that really works for their business.”

It’s nearly the weekend. So what do I do to relax and unwind:

Cooking – I enjoy cooking. I’m no masterchef, but I follow recipes and come up with something edible.

Family time – If it’s not spent ferrying my two children around, it’s watching or participating in their sports or hobbies. Grace is on her Gold Duke of Edinburgh practice. William has taken up golf this year and I’ve dusted off my clubs too!

Eating out – Meeting up with friends and enjoying food. It’s Greek at Gr.EAT this weekend.

I’ve often been asked where my favourite place in the world is.

I’ve been fortunate to have travelled to many countries with work and with holidays but there is one that is special. The island of Leros in the Greek Dodecanese. Not only have I spend many a happy holiday there but it’s where I stayed for 10 weeks not long after I was made redundant from A T Cross.

Grace, my daughter was only 17 months and we had planned to go for a 2 week holiday as a break from job hunting. Instead we didn’t take the flight home and rented and apartment on the sea front. That picture is the view from our window! It was there that I decided no more corporate world for me. I researched and signed up for a franchise with WSI and, after a short stint with Waterford Wedgewood, I embarked on this amazing journey.

I revisited Leros with Grace when she was 16 and she got so many hugs from locals she had no memory of. Happy days!

The government announcement yesterday about exams being delayed by three weeks in 2021, is especially relevant to me with a daughter doing her A Levels and son doing his GCSE’s.

It reminds me too of those years (seemed like an eternity) when I sat exams. O Levels, Highers, University Degree, Teacher Training. It just went on and on with every Easter holiday spend studying for the day of reckoning.

What it did teach me was that you always have to be open to learning new things. When I embarked on this Digital Marketing journey 15 years ago, it was with some trepidation. I knew little about computers or how they worked. But the first thing I learned is that it is not about computers. I still get people saying: (Oh you know about computers, don’t you? How do I ……..?”. Yes, the medium is via a computer but that is it. It’s like inviting Stephen Spielberg round for dinner and saying: “Hey you make films don’t you? Could you just have a look at my television, it’s not working properly.”

That aside it has been a huge learning curve and there is always something new every day especially in the world of Social Media. I’ve been proud to have achieved some recognition too. In 2010 I presented at the WSI European conference on how to manage the process of getting new clients. Locally our business has received awards for Support Service Company of the Year.

And you know what? This journey of discovery never ends. Who says you can’t teach and old dog new tricks?

What have you had to learn recently that was way outside your comfort zone?

I’m taking this opportunity to say Hi in my social media networks to those people I haven’t yet met or had the opportunity to engage with. Indeed, it might be news to those that I do know as well!

2020 marks the 15th anniversary of when I took the plunge and bought into a WSI Digital Marketing franchise. It wasn’t easy in those early days for a number of reasons:

  1. I was totally new to this industry
  2. I had just moved to Eastbourne where I knew absolutely no-one.
  3. My son was due to be born 2 weeks after starting up

All things that many experts would suggest are doomed for failure.

But here we are 15 years on, and I only wish I’d done it sooner. I’ve been through one of the worst financial crises in recent history. I’m going through one of the worst pandemics in recent history. Yet still we survive and I’ve many reasons to be grateful. Prior to embarking on this venture I spent some 25 years in the corporate world, working for others with good reward, yet when the crunch came, and the axe had to fall, those late nights and weeks away from home, meant for nothing. In the last 15 years I haven’t missed a parents’ night, a sports day or a school assembly. Yes, I’ve worked long hours but not to the detriment of my family and my well-being.

I’ve visited some interesting places too – Toronto, Paris, Barcelona, Hastings!

Along the way, we’ve also helped many businesses flourish using the power of the digital world.

So, has anyone else ever felt they were stagnating in their career and what did you do about it?

Designing and building a website for your business is only half the job. The other half applies to using digital marketing to promote your business online and ensure that it gets the attention it deserves.

Here are the 5 most common digital marketing methods that can be used to put your business website in front of the eyes of potential clients that are looking for your kind of services:

Design

Before anything, make sure that your website looks good visually.

Don’t go overboard – keep it simple! Nice clear design, well organised pages, good images – that’s all you need for starters.

How you go about creating the website is up to you but believe me, in the long run, it is worth paying a bit more to get a professional website design company to do this for you.

SEO

Search Engine Optimisation can help you increase the number of visitors to your website. By using best SEO practices, your website will appear high in search results on the screens of your target audience.

Make sure that the content from your site contains the right keywords searched by your target audience. To find keywords that can help you increase your rank, start by coming up with a list of words and phrases that you feel are most relevant to your customers and their relationship to your company. Ask yourself a few questions about the words and phrases you’ve chosen and be honest about whether they’re the best choices. Better still ask others what they would search for as they are less likely to use jargon.

Again a professional SEO agency will do the research for you and ensure your website is properly set up for the best possible return plus advise on ongoing marketing to improve and maintain your ranking.

Content Marketing

Keyword-rich informative, valuable, and consistent content will help you grow your audience organically thus advertising your business online in a more “natural” fashion. Remember, the goal is to educate and not to promote. Successful content marketers prefer to put this differently: “Teach! Don’t sell!”  And this is exactly what content marketing offers.

The goal is to build an audience that regularly consumes and shares your content. But, how can content marketing work if there is no sales pitch whatsoever? If you write and share useful content to your audience, you will send a clear message that you are offering your knowledge and insights on the matter for free.

How to achieve this? When creating content to advertise your business website, don’t talk about only about the things you offer and do. Instead, focus on examples – explain them the benefits of using your services.

Social Media Engagement

Social media platforms provide an opportunity for you to build your personal brand. The main goal is to utilise social media to position yourself as an expert in your niche. Before you start using social media to promote your business, make sure to update your personal profile to reflect the area of your expertise and to mention your website there! This will make it easier for people who are interested to find and learn more about your niche.

In order to increase social media engagement, you can adopt two strategies. One would be to start sharing the valuable content you have created on your official page. When doing this, make sure to answer any questions posted by your subscribers or followers. Engaging them in direct conversation is a great opportunity to help them by clearing things out. This builds trust.

The other would be to join relevant groups on social media and participate in public discussions. Try to remain as pragmatic and honest as possible. Help people by giving them information and valuable links (not only from your website, but from others too) and they will repay by following you.

PPC

Inbound marketing can get you far, but it takes time. After you launch your business website, you can improve your marketing results and achieve them much more quickly if you use the power of outbound marketing. Paid advertising is a viable way for online promotion of any business. Many business owners are regularly using it, so why shouldn’t you?!

Set your budget for pay-per-click (PPC) ads and start by making a plan. The main aspect of this plan should be the optimisation of your PPC efforts so you don’t get your budget spent in under one day. Make sure not to choose wrong keywords. There are tools that can help you choose the keywords that have the advantages of a commercial intent, low competition and, of course, volume. If you are not familiar with the current keywords trends, low-hanging fruit and long-tail ones are quite popular these days.

You can also use paid ad campaigns on your social media platforms. Facebook Ads have an amazing interface that helps you target specific audiences. Just make sure to choose a social media platform where most of your target audience is!
